“30,000 Persons Treated for Dog Bite”

Hindu (www.thehindu.com) (06/07/03); Subramanian, K.

In Tamilnadu, India, the government supplies the rabies vaccine to government hospitals and to the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital, but often the hospitals find treating dog bites difficult due to shortages of the vaccine.  The Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital treats up to 70 dog bite cases per day, and more than 30,000 people were treated for dog bites in government hospitals in the district in the last five months.  The population of stray dogs in India is growing; however, officials say they do not have enough personnel to catch the dogs and sterilize them, to keep them from reproducing.
