It was the last day of school at Monger Elementary in Elkhart Friday but it wasn't anything but business as usual. Both students and staff spent their day standing in line to receive immune globulin shots.

On Wednesday, a confirmed case of Hepatitis A turned up in a Monger school staffer who handed out popcorn during a fundraiser over a week ago. Letters then went home informing parents that their children may have been exposed the virus.

John Hutchings of the Elkhart Community Schools says, “A lot of activity that took place to get notification to parents, get the immune globulin shipped here, and set up for this event on Friday. So if it had to happen we are fortunate that we were able to do it before summer vacation.”

Four hundred and fifty students attend Monger Elementary. Hutchings estimates over half of students received the immunization Friday.

The immune globulin shot is considered highly effective in preventing Hepatitis A.
