M.R.I. Could Prove Superior to Mammography

LEAD PARAGRAPH - Another form of medical imaging appears to be better than mammography at detecting nascent tumors in women with a high risk of contracting breast cancer, scientists said here today.

But the scientists, at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, disagreed on whether the technique, magnetic resonance imaging, should supplant mammograms. Skeptics said that although M.R.I.'s might detect more tumors they might also produce too many false alarms.
