Italian HIV Vaccine Trial Ready to Begin
Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com)
(06/05/03); Lorenzi, Rossella
Valeria Fiorelli of Italy's National Health
Institute Laboratory says human trials for an experimental vaccine to prevent
and treat HIV will begin soon, pending regulatory approval. The vaccine works
by blocking HIV's transcriptional activation protein, which is released soon
after infection. Animal testing produced an effectiveness rate of about 71
percent without toxicity complications. HIV-negative adult volunteers will
participate in the HIV prevention vaccination trial, while patients infected
with HIV-1, who have mild immunodeficiency, will be involved in the treatment
trial.
