Fed: Australian-Developed HIV Vaccine Trial
Announced
The Australian-Thai HIV Vaccine Consortium has
announced that it is looking for 24 HIV-negative volunteers to begin trials of a
new HIV vaccine. The vaccine combines modified HIV DNA and a fowl pox virus,
and results of the first phase of the trial are expected by year-end. Using
funding from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the federal government,
the vaccine trial will be conducted at St. Vincent's Hospital in Sydney and is
the result of collaboration with Australian universities, the Commonwealth
Scientific & Industrial Research Organization, AIDS groups, and the Thai Red
Cross Society.
