South African Minister of Health Manto
Tshabalala-Msimang asserted Friday that the country will eradicate polio by
2006. The health minister was speaking in Theunissen, at the launch of the
national polio eradication campaign, and she initiated a countdown for the 945
days in which South Africa plans to eliminate the disease. The country is
working to vaccinate 90 percent of children under the age of one against polio.
