This summer, over 200,000 Scottish children will
receive a one-time booster against Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib),
following a small increase in the number of infections. Hib can lead to
pneumonia, meningitis, and septicemia. Although over 96 percent of children
receive a shot against Hib before four months of age, Scotland's chief medical
officer, Dr. Mac Armstrong, noted that over the last few years there has been a
small but significant increase in the number of cases. It is important that we
take action to arrest this increase in new infections before it becomes a more
serious concern.
