Polio vaccination campaign reached
the whole country
Luanda, 07/28 - The first stage of the national vaccination
campaign against poliomyelitis that was carried out from July 25 to
27, has for the first time reached the whole country, which did not
happen before because of the armed conflict that swept over the
country.
Health officials have informed that fortunately no case of
poliomyelitis has been registered since 2001, but this does not mean
that there might not be a few isolated cases, reason why the
authorities have carried out the vaccination campaign to make sure
poliomyelitis is eradicated from the country until 2005, as outlined
by the Government through the Health Ministry.
The Angolan health minister, Albertina Hamukuaia, urged for
special attention to be given to those areas with displaced people
and those with populations that have been repatriated from
neighbouring countries.
The vaccination campaigns in the country have had the help from
international organisations such as the World Health Organisation,
the UNICEF, Rotary International, USAID as well as from the
Governments of Japan, Holland, Portugal, Canada and South Africa.
The second stage of the national vaccination campaign will run
from August 29 to 31. Source: ANGOP
