$1 Million for Marshall Autism Center

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Autism Training Center at Marshall University will receive a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, an increase of $313,000 over last year, U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV) announced today.

"Those who live with autism are our neighbors and friends. People with autism can learn to cope with their condition and lead productive lives. But early diagnosis is crucial. Thousands of West Virginians have benefited from the good work of the Autism Training Center," Rahall said. "They've taught over 750 families how to help their autistic loved ones. This money will help the Center keep expanding Ruth Sullivan's dream."

The West Virginia Autism Center takes a unique approach to autism treatment. They assemble a "team" of parents, teachers, and others who have close contact with their patients, working with them for six months on average. Their method focuses on the unique needs and builds on the unique strengths of each individual. In addition to helping those who have been diagnosed with autism, the Center has an ongoing study to identify those who have not.
