“Herpes Vaccine Study Finds Few Takers at the U.”

Salt Lake Tribune (www.sltrib.com) (07/24/03) P. D1; Hamilton, Carey

Researchers at 17 clinical sites are testing an experimental herpes vaccine and are seeking 7,550 women to participate, but at the University of Utah site, enrollment has been low.  Out of an anticipated 500 participants, only 24 people have volunteered for the study since January.  There may be a misperception that the volunteers will contract the herpes virus, but the study’s principal investigator, Dr. Woody Spruance, states that “the patients do not get herpes” from the vaccine.  Researchers test the vaccine, which is intended to protect against type 1 and type 2 herpes, by looking for antibodies in the blood of those vaccinated.  The study is being led by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in partnership with GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals, which would produce the vaccine.
