Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/22/03)

The CEO and national coordinator for Nigeria’s National Program on Immunization (NPI), Dr. Dere Awosika, reiterated her and her department’s vow to battle polio until the disease is eradicated from the country.  The NPI also stated that it has gained donations of vaccine doses from two multinational vaccine producers, in the form of 1 million doses of a vaccine against tuberculosis, 1.9 million doses of a diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP) vaccine, and 1 million doses of hepatitis C vaccine from Serum India, and 300,000 doses of DTP vaccine from Aventis Pasteur, at a combined value of more than 100 million naira.  The agency has submitted a proposed change to the nation’s vaccination schedule for children in an effort to prevent childhood diseases more effectively than it has in the past.
