New vaccination
requirements in Iowa mandate that parents of children entering preschool or
kindergarten be immunized against chickenpox before school begins. According to
the new rule, which went into effect at the start of July, children born on or
after Sept. 15, 1997 and about to enter kindergarten or preschool must obtain
vaccinations for chickenpox; the same rule applies to licensed child-care
providers. Marnell Kretschmer, immunization program manager at the Iowa
Department of Health, said day-care centers and schools have until January 1 to
comply with the new requirement. Community health officials are encouraging
parents to begin the immunization process now instead of waiting until the week
before school opens.
