Three Afghan
children at the Zhare Dasht camp near the city of Kandahar died after becoming
infected with diphtheria, with 17 children infected overall, according to World
Health Organization (WHO) spokesperson Yvette Bivigou. In order to control the
disease, the WHO is isolating affected children and vaccinating children under
the age of five against the disease. In addition, the WHO has ordered 2 million
doses of anti-toxin to help prevent an outbreak of diphtheria. Currently, there
are 36,000 refugees at Zhare Dasht, and another 3,500 people are expected to be
moved there in the coming week.
