European health commissioner David Byrne, who proposed a European version of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to defend the area against health threats, faces a reduction in his proposal due to lack of finances. The new center merely coordinates efforts made in the European Union with a staff of about 100 and a budget of 12 million euros per year. The center aims to begin coordination in 2005.
