Angola: Optimism
About Poliomyelitis Eradication by 2005
Information
provided by the Angolan Health Ministry, the World Health Organization, and
UNICEF suggests that Angola has a good chance of eliminating poliomyelitis from
the country by 2005. Fatima Valente, director of the Broad Vaccination
Programme, said the prospects of Angola meeting the deadline set by the United
Nations are favorable, as there has been no recorded case of polio in the
country since 2001. Further fueling optimism is the improved quality of
prevention, such as epidemiological surveillance and door-to-door routine
vaccine coverage. Two upcoming rounds of immunization, in late July and late
August, aim to vaccinate 4.5 million Angolan children under the age of five
against polio.

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
