U.S. IMMUNIZATION
NEWS
House OKs Project
to Stockpile Vaccines
Associated Press (www.ap.org)
(07/16/03); Abrams, Jim
Project BioShield,
a $5.6 billion initiative, was overwhelmingly approved by the House of
Representatives. In order to induce pharmaceutical companies to develop
vaccines and antidotes for bioterrorism threats, markets will be guaranteed for
their vaccine products. The approval process of such products will also be
expedited. The legislation gives the government the power to run emergency
programs in cases where the pharmaceutical industry shows no interest and to
distribute treatments before they have regulatory approval in an emergency
situation.
