U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS

“Clinic Fills Void Left by Ballston Closing”

Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (07/14/03) P. E3

Lab technician Susan Wallace and nurse practitioner Tanya Chadwell, former employees of Georgetown University Hospital’s defunct Ballston medical center, saw a need for an immunization clinic focused on travelers and invested $20,000 to start the clinic after being denied support from the hospital.  International travelers, students, and children can now receive immunizations at their clinic, Capital Travel Medicine, in Rosslyn, Va. Wallace expected just three patients per day would pay $60 for the vaccines, but now the clinic is seeing up to eight patients per day. Wallace believes the business is due to their pre-marketing campaign and also due to their low prices.  Capital Travel Medicine stocks yellow fever and typhoid vaccines for children, which are hard to keep due to short shelf life.
