“Cancer Vaccine a Step Closer as 40 Patients Join Trial”

Sydney Sun Herald (AU) (www.sunherald.com.au) (07/13/03) P. 9; Wood, Miranda

Researchers in Australia are gearing up for another trial of Pentrix, a cancer vaccine developed by scientists at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney.  An early trial suggested that the drug could be a winner in its battle against mutations in the p53 gene, which causes half of all cancers, including breast, bowel, and lung cancer.  Hospital researcher Robyn Ward suggested that the Phase II trial could take as long as two years to complete, though it will only include 40 patients.  Furthermore, Ward indicated that the vaccine will not be on the market for at least another decade.
