Late Edition - Final , Section A , Page 1 , Column 3

ABSTRACT - Fight over capping jury awards in medical malpractice cases is expected to intensify during next year's elections, and two men in Washington stand as symbols of the debate: Republican Sen Bill Frist, surgeon, and Democratic Sen John Edwards, personal injury lawyer; Edwards, Democratic presidential contender, is kind of man Pres Bush and Frist rail against: plaintiff's lawyer who has made millions representing victims of malpractice; some say face-off is really between Edwards and Bush, with Frist serving as stand-in; Bush went to North Carolina, Edwards's home turf, to announce his initiative to change malpractice law (M)

Correction: July 15, 2003, Tuesday

An article on Friday about the opposing roles played by Senators Bill Frist and John Edwards in the debate over capping jury awards in medical malpractice cases misstated the name of a group that supports limits. It is the American Tort Reform Association, not American Tort Law.
