“Plug-and-Play Vaccines?”

Using gene therapy to deliver an adenovirus, a weakened version of a microbe, that is inserted with genetic information for a deadly virus like HIV, GenVec hopes to create new vaccines. The process creates proteins that in turn could launch an effective immune response to prevent infection. The National Institutes of Health is working with GenVec on a vaccine against AIDS and technology that is quick enough to adapt to new illnesses, such as severe acute respiratory syndrome.
