“Nigeria: 25 Percent of Polio Cases Found in Kano”

Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/10/03)

According to Nigeria’s expert review committee on polio chairman John Andrus, 25 percent of the polio cases in the country are found in the Kano state, with some 40 percent of those cases occurring in the town of Kano. Andrus noted that Nigeria is one of only seven countries still reporting polio cases, down from 125 countries in 1988.  To help Nigeria achieve its goal of eradicating polio, Andrus suggested that the Kano State government work quickly to mobilize its communities for anti-polio efforts, noting to state officials that “you are opportuned to demonstrate a critical success not only for Kano or Nigeria but for the world.”
