India Should
Intensify Polio Eradication Efforts
Dr. Jack C. Chow,
deputy assistant secretary for health and science for the U.S. State Department,
has issued a statement urging India to take a more active role in ending the
spread of polio. Noting that 75 percent of polio cases in the world occur in
India, Chow said that the nation has a chance to help wipe out the disease
forever. Furthermore, Chow noted that because polio does not recognize national
boundaries, other countries in the region should aid India in its efforts so
that the disease is stopped before it spreads to Indias neighbors.
