A new trial for an experimental AIDS vaccine has begun in Botswana through a joint initiative between the Botswana Ministry of Health and the Botswana-Harvard AIDS Institute Partnership. The vaccine is made of a non-infectious component of the genetic material of HIV; trial participants cannot get HIV from receiving the vaccine. The study will look for side effects to determine the vaccine’s safety and the body’s immune response. The vaccine was developed by the California company Epimune.
