Meningitis Outbreak

LEWISTON - Health officials say a relatively common virus is responsible for at least 52 cases of viral meningitis in north-central Idaho and Eastern Washington this spring.

Scientists say the echovirus is easily spread in temperate areas during summer and fall.

The cases of viral meningitis are not as serious as bacterial meningitis, and they've been limited to Latah, Clearwater and Nez Perce counties in Idaho and Asotin County in Washington.

Most cases are spread through coughing, sneezing and oral-fecal contamination. The most common symptoms are fever, severe headache, stiff neck, sensitivity to bright lights, nausea and vomiting.
