CHINO HILLS - San Bernardino County firefighters have
a choice to make by this fall: whether to be vaccinated
for smallpox.
Public Health officials from the county have visited
several fire departments including San Bernardino,
Rialto, Hesperia and Redlands to give workshops
explaining the pros and cons.
"They have been very good with being interested and
wanting to have the information,' said Alison Rue, a
smallpox program coordinator for the county Public
Health Department. "We are not sure who will be willing
to get it, but whether they get it or not, it's good
information. Once people are educated, it's easier to
move straight into the vaccination process.'

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves, and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education."
