U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS

“Parents in Jackson County Rush to Immunize Children Against Pertussis”

Associated Press (www.ap.org) (07/06/03)

Since early May, 11 cases of pertussis have been confirmed in Jackson

County, Ore., with 50 more presumptive cases, and hundreds of parents have

brought their children in for immunizations against whooping cough.  County

public health nurses administered 339 vaccinations during May and June, a

nearly 90 percent increase over the same period in 2002.  No new cases have

shown up for almost two weeks, according to public health nurse Viki

Barbour, and public health officials are hoping that the outbreak is

waning.  Public health workers have contacted over 600 people to tell them

that they or their children could have been exposed.
