“Doctors Speaking Ill of New Vaccine Law”

San Antonio Express-News (www.mysanantonio.com) (07/03/03) P. 1A; Foy,

Nicole

A new Texas law that allows children to attend school even if unvaccinated

as long as their parents hold a philosophical objection to vaccines has

angered doctors and public health officials in the state.  Pediatricians

and public health officials say that the law could put the public in harm’s

way.  Until the law was passed, unvaccinated children could only enter

classes in Texas if they were given a medical exemption from a physician or

if their families practiced a recognized religion that objected to

vaccinations in its tenets and bylaws.  Advocates for the new law say that

the move puts health decisions back in the hands of parents, taking them

away from bureaucrats who should not be deciding for the general public.
