Congo to Vaccinate 100,000 Children Against Measles, Polio
Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (07/04/03)
About 100,000 children living in the war-torn Pool region of the Democratic
Republic of Congo will receive vaccinations against measles and polio
following the recent peace agreement proposed by President Denis Sassou
Nguesso. The vaccination campaign was delayed because of war, and the 12
months of fighting has led to a decrease in health care and sanitation in
the region. The vaccination coverage rate in the region dropped from 50
percent to just 18 percent during the war, according to the health ministry.
