Behavior on the autism spectrum

According to the Autism Society of America: "Although autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors, children and adults can exhibit any combination of the behaviors in any degree of severity."

Most worrisome may be aggressive or self-injurious behavior. Other traits exhibited by people with autism include:

 

  • insistence on sameness, or resistance to change;

     

  • difficulty in expressing needs, and use of gestures or pointing instead of words;

     

  • repetition of words or phrases instead of normal, responsive language;

     

  • laughing, crying, or showing distress for reasons not apparent to others;

     

  • preferring to be alone or acting aloof;

     

  • throwing tantrums;

     

  • difficulty in mixing with others;

     

  • aversion to physical contact;

     

  • little or no eye contact;

     

  • lack of response to normal teaching methods;

     

  • sustained odd play;

     

  • spinning objects;

     

  • inappropriate attachments to objects;

     

  • apparent over-sensitivity or under-sensitivity to pain;

     

  • lack of real fear of danger

     

  • noticeable physical over-activity or extreme under-activity;

     

  • uneven motor skills; and

     

  • lack of response to verbal cues; acts as if deaf although hearing tests in normal range.
