According to the Autism Society of America: "Although autism
is defined by a certain set of behaviors, children and adults can
exhibit any combination of the behaviors in any degree of
severity."
Most worrisome may be aggressive or self-injurious behavior.
Other traits exhibited by people with autism include:
insistence on sameness,
or resistance to change;
difficulty in expressing
needs, and use of gestures or pointing instead of words;
repetition of words or
phrases instead of normal, responsive language;
laughing, crying, or
showing distress for reasons not apparent to others;
preferring to be alone or
acting aloof;
throwing tantrums;
difficulty in mixing with
others;
aversion to physical
contact;
little or no eye contact;
lack of response to
normal teaching methods;
sustained odd play;
spinning objects;
inappropriate attachments
to objects;
apparent over-sensitivity
or under-sensitivity to pain;
lack of real fear of
danger
noticeable physical
over-activity or extreme under-activity;
uneven motor skills; and
lack of response to
verbal cues; acts as if deaf although hearing tests in normal range.
