"Zimbabwe: New Measles Campaign to Net More Children"

Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (06/30/03)

Measles is the leading fatal disease among children in Zimbabwe, and UNICEF is planning to launch a follow-up measles immunization campaign this week to catch the thousands of children who were not vaccinated during last year's campaign.  "Last year there was a shortage of resources such as syringes and needles," said UNICEF health consultant Eugen Manyora, explaining the failure of last year's 10-day campaign to achieve more than 80 percent of its target of 2 million children under age five.  "Also, a resource-strapped awareness campaign can be attributed to the program's failure to meet its goal."  UNICEF has provided $257 million to Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health and Child Welfare to cover 16 districts for the immunization effort.
