"Irish Scientist
Discovers New Strain of AIDS Virus"
Grace McCormack, a
lecturer at the National University of Ireland, has discovered a new strain of
HIV while researching blood samples from Malawi that date back to the early
1980s. Because the strain seems to have died out, it could help scientists find
a vaccine for HIV. There are nine known strains of HIV, but this strain has not
been seen in blood samples from the 1990s. McCormick says that the researchers
have applied for funding to learn more about the new HIV strain.
