INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Whooping Cough Outbreak in Afghan Mountains Under Control: UN" Agence France Presse (www.afp.com/english/home) (01/23/03)
At least 27 children have died from whooping cough in northeastern Afghanistan this year, but the United Nations says the outbreak has been partially contained by a joint government and aid agency operation that has reached about 189 villages with vaccines. About 100 children per day are being administered antibiotics, and they are also being vaccinated against other diseases, including polio and measles. Since November 2002, whooping cough has claimed the lives of at least 54 children in Badakhshan, aid agencies say.
