"Whooping Cough Spreads in Chicago"

New York Times (www.nytimes.com) (01/10/03) P. A20

U.S. health officials reported Thursday that 24 adults in the Chicago area have been diagnosed with pertussis, or whooping cough.  Dr. Gregory Huhn of the Illinois Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that all of the cases were among employees at a Chicago oil refinery and among people living close by.  The incident serves as an indication that the disease is making a comeback in the United States, they said.  Last year, noted Huhn, nearly 8,300 cases of pertussis were reported in the United States--the highest number since 1967.
