"Tariff on Biotech Vaccine Imports May Go Up"
Economic Times of India (www.economictimes.com) (01/11/03); Narendranath, K G
India's Department of Biotechnology would like to increase import duties on biological vaccines for hepatitis B, polio, measles-mumps-rubella, rabies, and typhoid to between 30 percent and 40 percent of the purchase price to protect the nation's domestic vaccine industry. The duties are currently under 10 percent of the price in most cases. Types of products that are not also made in India would be exempt from the tariffs. The department would also like to help the domestic biotechnology industry by instituting a seven- to 10-year tax exemption.
