"Rise in Chickenpox Cases"

Knox Leader (AU)(01/28/03) P. 29; Evans, Trent

Australian physicians are warning the public of the risk of chickenpox spreading when children return to school this month, after several children, including a newborn, have been treated for severe symptoms of the disease during the past week.  Parents should make sure their children have been immunized against chickenpox, say experts from the Monash Medical Center and the Australian Medical Association.  Each year in Australia, an average of five people, usually children, die from serious complications of the disease, such as pneumonia or encephalitis.
