"Maine to Get $1.4M for Children's Vaccines"
Bangor Daily News (ME) (www.bangornews.com) (01/03/03) P. B3
A federal program will provide Maine $1.4 million in grants for four years to support supplies and wages for a state effort to immunize and vaccinate children. While nearly 98 out of 100 Maine children have been vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, for example, increasing that rate could prevent even more illness and lower health care expenditures. A recent report by Healthy Maine 2010 indicates that for every $1 spent on vaccines, between $2 and $24 could be saved in health care expenses. The Bureau of Health attributes its improvement in immunization rates over the last nine years to state-purchased vaccine, which is free to all children, and public education efforts.
