Following a recent increase in meningitis cases
in the Lombardy region of Italy, the first mass vaccination campaign against the
disease will soon begin in the country, at a total cost of 250,000 euros. A
meningitis C immunization campaign was launched in Lombardy last September;
however, six cases of bacterial meningitis were recorded in the Magenta area
within 45 days. Approximately 10,000 children and teenagers in Magenta, which
is near Milan,
are being encouraged to get the meningitis C vaccine. A total of 187 meningitis
cases were recorded in Lombardy last year.
