"Inhaled Flu Vaccine Closer"

Bergen Record (www.bergen.com) (01/06/03) P. F2; Marsa, Linda

MedImmune's inhaled flu vaccine, called FluMist, may be available in time for the 2003 flu season for healthy people between the ages of five and 49, says a company spokesman.  An advisory panel for the Food and Drug Administration said there was not enough evidence that the vaccine is effective for people ages 50 to 64; but the drug company said it would undertake more research into the vaccine's effectiveness on people aged 50 to 64, if the FDA approves it for the younger age group.  It is hoped that the inhaled vaccine will encourage individuals who dislike getting shots to get vaccinated against the flu.
