INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Final Polio Battle Launched"
Halifax Daily News (www.canada.com/halifax/dailynews) (01/30/03) P. 4; Flinn, Brian
In order to eliminate polio from the last seven countries where it is still found by 2005, Rotary International is hoping to raise C$123 million by June, including C$225,000 in Nova Scotia. The countries where polio is still being reported are: Egypt, India, Mozambique, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Zambia. In 1998, 350,000 cases of polio were reported worldwide; however, aggressive immunization efforts have reduced that number to just 483 in 2002. "We're near the end, and it's hard to keep people focused," notes John Williamson, Rotary's team leader in Nova Scotia. "But no one is safe until everyone is safe."
