"Fewer Shots in Store for Baby"

Time (www.time.com) (01/20/03) P. 146; Bjerklie, David

A new five-in-one combination vaccine will help to reduce the number of shots that children receive in their first two years of life.  The new vaccine--which protects against hepatitis B, polio, diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis--is given at two months, four months, and six months of age. The vaccine, called Pediarix, reduces by six the number of shots young children receive, and it also makes it easier to comply with immunization recommendations.  Dr. Joel Ward, head of the Center for Vaccine Research at the University of California at Los Angeles, notes that Pediarix "has been in development for 10 years and meets every single standard of safety and effectiveness."
