Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.,
is one of several research centers selected by the National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Diseases of the National Institutes of Health to participate in a
national study of whether diluted smallpox vaccine is still effective in people
originally vaccinated more than two decades ago. The study will involve a
vaccine from Wyeth, which made some 15 million doses that are being stored by
the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Other centers participating in
the study include the University of
Rochester, the University of California
at Los Angeles, Northern California
Kaiser-Permanente, the University of
Maryland, St. Louis University, and Stanford University.
