"DOR BioPharma Executes Option for Non-Toxic Ricin Vaccine"
Dow Jones Newswire (www.djnewswires.com) (01/07/03)
DOR BioPharma will license, from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, a patent related to the first recombinant ricin A chain mutants vaccine, which is intended to protect humans against aerosolized ricin. Ricin, the second most potent toxin known to humankind, could be used in a terrorist attack, and creation of a vaccine for humans could protect soldiers on the battlefield or first responders in the event of a bioterrorism attack involving the toxin. Damage to the lungs that is caused by inhaling the toxin is rapid and cannot be reversed.
