"Corixa and IDRI Initiate U.S. Phase I Trial of Vaccine"
Dow Jones Newswire (www.djnewswires.com) (01/13/03) ; Wetzel, Kara
Phase 1 trials to determine the safety and effectiveness of an experimental vaccine against human leishmaniasis--a skin and visceral disease prevalent in Africa, Asia and Latin America--have been launched by Corixa Corp. and the Infectious Disease Research Institute. The vaccine being tested, Leish-111f, is comprised of three Leishmania proteins and Corixa's MPL-SE adjuvant. Leishmaniasis--which is caused by the Leishmania parasite--kills about 500,000 people, mostly children, annually. The trials are being funded by grants from the National Institute of Health and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
