PARENTS ignorance about the consequences of not
giving their children the MMR jab could put unborn children at risk from
rubella, a charity has warned.
Sense, the charity for the deaf and blind, said the public was not
sufficiently aware of the dangers of rubella, or German measles, to
pregnant women.
Fears about a possible link between autism and the triple measles, mumps
and rubella jab have led to many parents refusing to let their children
have the vaccine.
Sense warned that children not protected against rubella were at risk of
catching and passing it on to pregnant women who do not have immunity. If
a woman catches rubella during early pregnancy her child could be born
with congenital rubella syndrome which can cause deafness, blindness and
damage the heart, brain and nervous system.
