"Central Africa Republic: UNICEF Anti-Poverty Program Launched" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (01/03/02)

In an effort to reduce poverty among women and children in the country, UNICEF and the Central African Republic (CAR) have signed an agreement for a plan of action that involves 11 projects.  The plan covers five priority

areas: immunization, girls' schooling, HIV/AIDS, protection against exploitation and discrimination, and the promotion of children's development.  Aboudou Adjibade, the UNICEF representative in CAR, introduced the $3.5 million project, saying UNICEF has agreed to continue its support of the government's efforts, despite the continued conflict with rebels in some parts of the country.  The conflict prevented the start-up of a national vaccination campaign that had been schedule for last December, and many regions have depleted medicine supplies.  As a result, an outbreak of meningitis has emerged in Mobaye, a city 300 km east of CAR's capital of Bangui, and about 60 cases of measles have been identified in Ouhame Pende, a northwestern province.
