U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Caregivers With Infants Can Be Vaccinated"
USA Today (www.usatoday.com) (01/15/03) P. 7D; Healy, Michelle
Statistics collected during the 1960s suggest that the risk of a vaccinated adult infecting a healthy infant with the smallpox virus is remote. To that end, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices said this week that hospital workers with children under one year of age would not be excluded from upcoming hospital smallpox vaccination programs. The federal panel did concede however, to adding language to its recommendations that recognizes the rights of individual states to employ more restrictive immunization rules that do exclude those same individuals because of the risk of transmitting the vaccinia virus.
