U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS

"Bush Seeks Funds for Wider Effort to Curb Chronic Diseases" Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (01/22/03) P. A5; Goldstein, Amy; Connolly, Ceci

Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy G. Thompson announced Tuesday that the White House will seek $100 million to boost a grants program to fight diabetes, obesity,  and asthma.  According to Thompson, the initiative would direct the funds to U.S. cities that are trying to encourage their residents to make changes that can reduce chronic ailments, for example by improving nutrition and exercising more.  Thompson also said that he is working with other officials to develop a compensation plan for medical personnel and emergency responders who experience complications after being vaccinated against smallpox.  "There's some anxiety out there, and I want this to be successful," Thompson said of the immunization plan set to begin this week.
