"UN Launches Drive Against Tetanus in Afghanistan"

Reuters (www.reuters.com) (02/02/03)

In an attempt to reduce deaths related to tetanus among mothers and infants, female volunteers and health workers recently went to homes in Kabul, Afghanistan, offering free tetanus vaccinations.  The goal of the program is to vaccinate 740,000 women between the ages of 15 years and 49 years by next Saturday and 3 million Afghan women over the next three years.  UNICEF senior health advisor Francois Gasse asserts that almost 10 percent of infants in the country die from tetanus.
