ABSTRACT
- Scripps Research
Institute reports finding way to treat two deadly heart ailments
caused by protein that folds into abnormal shape, with implications
for treating Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and some twenty other diseases
also caused by misfolded proteins; clinical tests planned on
patients with familial amyloid cardiomyopathy, which afflicts
million blacks, and senile systemic amyloidosis, which clogs heart
tissue of 10-15 percent of people over age 80; Dr Jeffrey W Kelly
explains treatment with 'small molecule' drug that stops misfolding
of transthyretin protein (M) For the first time, researchers have
found a way to treat two deadly heart ailments that are caused by a
protein that folds into an abnormal shape.
Although the treatment is tailored to the two forms of heart
disease, it is based on principles that may lead to similar
therapies for other conditions caused by misfolded proteins,
including Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, adult-onset
diabetes and the human form of mad cow disease.
