Scientists are confident there will be no side effects to an improved
whooping cough vaccine under development at the University of Southern
Queensland.
Research team leader Professor T K Mukkur says they are hoping to begin human
trials in the next 18 months, with the vaccine possibly available for widespread
use within two years.
He says children and teenagers will be inoculated using a nose drop or spray
rather than by the traditional injection.
Professor Mukkur says the low cost of producing the vaccine means it could have
worldwide benefits.
